Convener
Prof. Maura Conway (Dublin City University)
NB: Important Notes
Workshop attendance is free but general conference registration is required.
This workshop will run concurrently with other morning sessions.
Workshop Descriptor
This half-day workshop will focus on the ethical issues raised when conducting Internet-mediated extremism and terrorism research. In particular, there will be a focus in the workshop on two issues:
1. How to use available ethics guidelines, such as those produced and the British Psychological association, to think through the ethics aspects of a project, take steps to mitigate any ethical risks, and have your proposal positively assessed by a research ethics board/institutional review board/other oversight committee;
2. Policies and best practices that have been developed to safeguard the well-being of researchers and analysts who work with violent extremist media content.
The workshop should be of particular interest to PhD students and supervisors, early career researchers, or indeed anybody starting to undertake research on online violent extremism and terrorism.
Further details of the workshop, including speakers, etc., will be posted here as they become available.
