VOX Pol Workshop: Borderline Online Content

VOX-Pol are pleased to announce our next online workshop on “Borderline Online Content”.  This virtual event will take place on 13 June 2024, at 9:15 UK time / 10:15 Germany. The workshop is hosted by Brigitte Naderer, Senior Researcher at the Medical University of Vienna, Heidi Schulze Research Associate at LMU Munich, and Diana Rieger, Professor at LMU Munich.

The presenters will speak on topics around borderline, ‘hard to regulate’, content in the following four talks:

  • Heidi Schulze & Simon Greipl “A Little Less Hate, But a Lot More Harm – Fear Speech as Strategic Borderline Communication”
  • Hannah Rose: “Hybridised Online Hate and Extremism in the Israel/Gaza Conflict”
  • Ursula Schmid “Legitimizing hostility through humor: Perceptions and effects of humorous hate speech on social media”
  • Broderick McDonald “Lawful but Awful: Borderline Content and Human Rights”

About the speakers:

  • Heidi Schulze is Research Associate at the Department of Media and Communication at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU Munich). Heidi is part of a research project studying radicalization dynamics and monitoring extremist content in online environments.
  • Simon Greipl is a Doctoral Researcher at the Department of Media and Communication at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU Munich). His research focuses on the recognition and analysis of radicalization processes and extremism on the Internet relevance.
  • Hannah Rose is Hate and Extremism Analyst at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD). Hannah researches far-right extremism and antisemitism online.
  • Ursula Schmid is also a Doctoral Researcher at the Department of Media and Communication at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU Munich). Ursula studies (digital) media effects in relation to hate speech with a focus on humour.
  • Broderick McDonald is a Associate Fellow at the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation (ICSR). Brody researches conflict, extremism, and political violence.

The event will be recorded and afterwards added to the VOX-Pol YouTube channel.
