A workshop based on the semantic multimedia analysis for researching violent online political extremism content was held under the auspices of VOX-Pol at SRIE2016 (Security Research & Innovation Event), which took place in The Hague, The Netherlands, on June 1 and 2. SRIE is an annual event where industry, governments and knowledge institutions come together to discuss the latest security challenges for Europe, including terrorism, cybercrime, and forensics.
The workshop is part of VOX-Pol’s project which focuses on the development of innovative technologies for semantic analysis of multimedia from heterogeneous online information sources. The aim is to develop technologies that significantly improve the researchers’ ability to engage in rigorous, large-scale, empirical research of violent online political extremism as well as the comparative analysis of the online strategies different extremist groups apply. Participants of the workshop were provided a brief overview of research and given an opportunity to test its applicability in the analysis of online extremist communities.
Dr. Stevan Rudinac of the University of Amsterdam was the speaker while TNO’s Serena Oggero co-moderated the workshop.
